Timothy Tsui
Emerald Cloud Temple in Taishan, China
2022 Tiger of the Year
Timothy is a self taught hobby artist, and developed a keen interest in painting from a young age.
Timothy worked as a medical scientist in hospital pathology laboratory, both in Hong Kong and in Melbourne after migrating to Australia more than 40 years ago. As work was very time consuming, he could only paint on and off for much of his life. After retirement in 2012, he was able to spend more time in painting and joined a number of social art groups. Timothy was a member of the Waverley Art Society for many years until it closed in 2015. He the went on to join the Glen Eira U3A, followed by Wheelers Hill U3A. In both U3A’s he acted as coordinator and tutor their seniors art programs, still teaching three painting classes for the Wheelers Hill U3A.
Timothy does not have a favourite medium, and works with various mediums including oil, pencil, charcoal, pastel, acrylic and watercolour. He concentrates on watercolour when teaching because it is a great way for seniors with no or little knowledge in drawing and painting, to learn. He also teaches using pencil, charcoal, and ink.
Timothy is uses quite a traditional painting style, towards impressionism. It has not and probably will not changed. Most of his painting subjects are taken from his travel experience. He likes to present what he has seen without must distortion in the final piece.
He treasures all his work whether good or bad because he puts his heart into them. He doesn't believe he has yet achieved his masterpiece.
Timothy's advice to emerging artists is "Paint for your pleasure abd not only for others. It is a bonus if other people love your work too. Enjoy the process of painting and disregard what the outcome will be. With constant practice the result will improve. Do not be discouraged and give up because of some bad results or unfavorible criticism from others viewers."
